Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,555 people, 938 households, and 666 families residing in the city. The population density is 185.4/km² (480.4/mi²). There are 1,039 housing units at an average density of 75.4/km² (195.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.23% White, 27.98% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 938 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
