Menard County, Illinois

Menard County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 12,486. Its county seat is Petersburg, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 817 km² (315 mi²). 814 km² (314 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,486 people, 4,873 households, and 3,552 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 5,285 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.59% White, 0.38% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,873 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,596, and the median income for a family is $52,995. Males have a median income of $36,870 versus $27,010 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,584. 8.20% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.50% are under the age of 18 and 6.00% are 65 or older.
