Sukarnoputri was the daughter of Indonesia's first president, General Sukarno. She became active in politics following her father's death.
As the runner-up in the 1999 Presidential election she was appointed Vice President under her opponent Abdurrahman Wahid[?], following Indonesian constitutional convention. She succeded to the presidency following the impeachment of Wahid in 2001, and became Indonesia's first female president and the female ruler of the world's largest Muslim nation, an event not eagerly embraced by some of Indonesia's more fundamentalist Muslim groups.
