McPherson County, South Dakota

McPherson County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,904. Its county seat is Leola6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,983 km² (1,152 mi²). 2,945 km² (1,137 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.29% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,904 people, 1,227 households, and 822 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 1,465 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.35% White, 0.00% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,227 households out of which 23.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.10% are married couples living together, 2.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% are non-families. 31.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 20.10% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 29.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.
