McMinn County, Tennessee

McMinn County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 49,015. Its county seat is Athens6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,119 km² (432 mi²). 1,114 km² (430 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 49,015 people, 19,721 households, and 14,317 families residing in the county. The population density is 44/km² (114/mi²). There are 21,626 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (50/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.72% White, 4.48% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,721 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.70% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,919, and the median income for a family is $38,992. Males have a median income of $31,051 versus $20,524 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,725. 14.50% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.20% are under the age of 18 and 16.80% are 65 or older.
