McKean County, Pennsylvania

McKean County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 45,936. Its county seat is Smethport6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,549 km² (984 mi²). 2,542 km² (982 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 45,936 people, 18,024 households, and 12,094 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 21,644 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.46% White, 1.87% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,024 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.70 males.
