McDuffie County, Georgia

McDuffie County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 21,231. The county's county seat is Thomson, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 690 km² (266 mi²). 673 km² (260 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,231 people, 7,970 households, and 5,857 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (82/mi²). There are 8,916 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.78% White, 37.52% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,970 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 19.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,920, and the median income for a family is $38,235. Males have a median income of $30,147 versus $20,499 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,005. 18.40% of the population and 14.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.00% are under the age of 18 and 20.00% are 65 or older.
