McCreary County, Kentucky

McCreary County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 17,080. Its county seat is Whitley City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,115 km² (431 mi²). 1,108 km² (428 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,080 people, 6,520 households, and 4,753 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 7,405 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.99% White, 0.63% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,520 households out of which 35.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 13.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,348, and the median income for a family is $22,261. Males have a median income of $20,823 versus $15,575 for females. The per capita income for the county is $9,896. 32.20% of the population and 26.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.50% are under the age of 18 and 27.30% are 65 or older.
