Max Township is a township located in Itasca County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 156.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 88.6 km² (34.2 mi²). 74.4 km² (28.7 mi²) of it is land and 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.10% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 156 people, 59 households, and 42 families residing in the township. The population density is 2.1/km² (5.4/mi²). There are 125 housing units at an average density of 1.7/km² (4.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 64.74% White, 0.00% African American, 19.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 16.03% from two or more races. 3.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 59 households out of which 27.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the township the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 19.2% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 108.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $21,500, and the median income for a family is $22,000. Males have a median income of $27,083 versus $10,833 for females. The per capita income for the township is $13,889. 20.5% of the population and 18.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.2% are under the age of 18 and 33.3% are 65 or older.
