Massac County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 15,161. Its county seat is Metropolis, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 627 km² (242 mi²). 619 km² (239 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,161 people, 6,261 households, and 4,320 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (63/mi²). There are 6,951 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.57% White, 5.48% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,261 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,498, and the median income for a family is $39,068. Males have a median income of $32,793 versus $20,399 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,334. 13.50% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.40% are under the age of 18 and 14.10% are 65 or older.
