Marquette County, Michigan

Marquette County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 64,634. Its county seat is Marquette6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8,871 km² (3,425 mi²). 4,716 km² (1,821 mi²) of it is land and 4,155 km² (1,604 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 46.83% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 64,634 people, 25,767 households, and 16,490 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 32,877 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.12% White, 1.32% African American, 1.49% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,767 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.30% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.00% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 13.60% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,548, and the median income for a family is $46,281. Males have a median income of $36,431 versus $23,609 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,070. 10.90% of the population and 6.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.20% are under the age of 18 and 6.40% are 65 or older.
