Markup

Markup is the use of a markup language to describe a particular document. It can be used in several ways:

a noun form which refers to the particular set of markup tags used in a document:
"this document uses some weird markup!"
a noun form meaning any document based on that language:
"this web site uses XML for markup."
a verb for meaning the use of the markup:
"markup this page with our standard format."
