Markup

Markup is the use of a markup language to describe a particular document. It can be used in several ways:

  1. a noun form which refers to the particular set of markup tags used in a document:
    "this document uses some weird markup!"
  2. a noun form meaning any document based on that language:
    "this web site uses XML for markup."
  3. a verb for meaning the use of the markup:
    "markup this page with our standard format."
