Marketing research (also called consumer research) comprises a form of applied sociological study which concentrates on understanding the behaviours, whims and preferences, mainly current and future, of consumers in a market-based economy.

Marketing research uses many techniques similar to those of political polling.

The term Marketing research is popularly used interchangibly with the term Market research. Technically however,Market research refers more correctly to the financial analysis of companies, industries, or sectors. It is usually done by financial analysts and is provided to potential investors.
