Marion County, Tennessee

Marion County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 27,776. Its county seat is Jasper6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,327 km² (512 mi²). 1,291 km² (498 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.72% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,776 people, 11,037 households, and 8,134 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 12,140 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.33% White, 4.14% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,037 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,419, and the median income for a family is $36,351. Males have a median income of $30,236 versus $21,778 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,419. 14.10% of the population and 10.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.00% are under the age of 18 and 14.30% are 65 or older.
