Marion County, Missouri

Marion County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 28,289. Its county seat is Palmyra6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,150 km² (444 mi²). 1,135 km² (438 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.34% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 28,289 people, 11,066 households, and 7,524 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (65/mi²). There are 12,443 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.26% White, 4.62% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,066 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,774, and the median income for a family is $41,290. Males have a median income of $30,935 versus $20,591 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,964. 12.10% of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.30% are under the age of 18 and 10.50% are 65 or older.
