Marion is a town located in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,305.

Geography Marion is located at 32°25'20" North, 88°38'50" West (32.422182, -88.647323)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.34% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,305 people, 468 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density is 173.1/km² (448.7/mi²). There are 555 housing units at an average density of 73.6/km² (190.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 52.87% White, 45.82% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 468 households out of which 42.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% are married couples living together, 28.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 70.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 62.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,413, and the median income for a family is $28,438. Males have a median income of $27,778 versus $17,303 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,504. 32.8% of the population and 30.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 50.1% are under the age of 18 and 20.5% are 65 or older.
