Manning, South Carolina

Manning is a city located in Clarendon County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,025. It is the county seat of Clarendon County6.

Geography Manning is located at 33°41'38" North, 80°12'55" West (33.693998, -80.215408)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,025 people, 1,550 households, and 1,063 families residing in the city. The population density is 644.8/km² (1,671.1/mi²). There are 1,727 housing units at an average density of 276.7/km² (717.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.80% White, 62.36% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,550 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.3% are married couples living together, 29.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,483, and the median income for a family is $26,269. Males have a median income of $26,135 versus $19,086 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,502. 30.1% of the population and 23.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.5% are under the age of 18 and 20.3% are 65 or older.
