Manhattan, Illinois

Manhattan is a village located in Will County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,330. The city is located in northeastern Illinois approximately 40 miles south of Chicago.

History Manhattan was incorporated in 1886. It is an old and established community. Having its roots in farming, the village has grown over the last ten years to accommodate over 3,200 people. Its forebears of German and Irish heritage give expression in the early spring festival Irish Fest.

Geography Manhattan is located at 41°25'19" North, 87°58'52" West (41.422044, -87.981042)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,330 people, 1,144 households, and 870 families residing in the village. The population density is 381.5/km² (989.3/mi²). There are 1,163 housing units at an average density of 133.2/km² (345.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.21% White, 0.21% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 3.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,144 households out of which 46.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.41.

In the village the population is spread out with 32.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $55,559, and the median income for a family is $62,865. Males have a median income of $50,174 versus $30,865 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,666. 3.6% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.7% are under the age of 18 and 4.7% are 65 or older.
