Manchester bombing by IRA

On June 15, 1996, the Provisional Irish Republican Army exploded a 3000lb bomb contained in a Ford van parked in the centre of Manchester.

Due to a speedy evacuation, nobody was killed by the explosion, but 206 people were injured and 70,000 square metres of retail and office space had to be reconstructed. It took about four years for the damage to be erased. Some have claimed the event to have turned out to be positive for the city, since it led to a large amount of redevelopment, at a cost of millions of pounds.
