Main-Taunus is a Kreis (district) in the middle of Hesse, Germany. Neighboring districts are Hochtaunuskreis, district-free Frankfurt, Groß-Gerau, district-free Wiesbaden, Rheingau-Taunus.
|
1806 the area became united for the first time as part of the Nassau duchy. In 1866 the duchy became part of Prussia. In 1928 the Main-Taunus district was formed. The cities Wiesbaden and Frankfurt did grow so much that the sorrounding districts became too small, thus the municipalities of the districts Höchst, Wiesbaden, the help-district Königstein and the Untertaunuskreis were merged into a new district. 1972 the northern part of the district went to the Hochtaunus district, and in 1977 the east parts became part of the city Wiesbaden and the newly formed district Rheingau-Taunus. In 1980 the capital was moved from Frankfurt-Höchst to Hofheim.
The district covers the southern part of the Taunus mountains, with the Main valley forming part of the district's border in the south. The district is the smallest district of Germany areawise.
