Madison Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania

Madison Township is a township located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 943.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 80.8 km² (31.2 mi²). 78.5 km² (30.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.79% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 943 people, 362 households, and 258 families residing in the township. The population density is 12.0/km² (31.1/mi²). There are 566 housing units at an average density of 7.2/km² (18.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.94% White, 0.42% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 362 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 106.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $26,875, and the median income for a family is $35,156. Males have a median income of $30,227 versus $16,667 for females. The per capita income for the township is $12,583. 19.3% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.1% are under the age of 18 and 21.3% are 65 or older.
