Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,520 people, 4,739 households, and 3,521 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 5,239 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.71% White, 11.41% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,739 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 21.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
