Madison County, Montana

Madison County is a county located in the U.S. State of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 6,851. Its county seat is Virginia City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 9,331 km² (3,603 mi²). 9,289 km² (3,587 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,851 people, 2,956 households, and 1,921 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 4,671 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.02% White, 0.04% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,956 households out of which 26.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 4.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 29.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 4.90% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 30.10% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 102.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,233, and the median income for a family is $35,536. Males have a median income of $26,606 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,944. 12.10% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.20% are under the age of 18 and 9.30% are 65 or older.
