Madison County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 25,730. The county's county seat is Danielsville, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 740 km² (286 mi²). 735 km² (284 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,730 people, 9,800 households, and 7,330 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 10,520 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.01% White, 8.46% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,800 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,347, and the median income for a family is $42,189. Males have a median income of $31,324 versus $22,426 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,998. 11.60% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.00% are under the age of 18 and 16.50% are 65 or older.
