Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,061 people, 1,227 households, and 764 families residing in the city. The population density is 467.1/km² (1,209.7/mi²). There are 1,395 housing units at an average density of 212.9/km² (551.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.74% White, 62.43% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,227 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.6% are married couples living together, 27.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.13.
In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.6 males.
