Mackinaw City, Michigan

Mackinaw City is a village located in Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 859.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 55.54% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 859 people, 404 households, and 244 families residing in the village. The population density is 98.7/km² (255.3/mi²). There are 630 housing units at an average density of 72.4/km² (187.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 93.02% White, 0.12% African American, 4.54% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 404 households out of which 21.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.67.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $37,031, and the median income for a family is $43,125. Males have a median income of $31,771 versus $30,125 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,725. 9.7% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.5% are under the age of 18 and 2.8% are 65 or older.
