Lunenburg County is a county located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 13,146. Its county seat is Lunenburg[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,120 km² (432 mi²). 1,118 km² (432 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,146 people, 4,998 households, and 3,383 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 5,736 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 59.12% White, 38.58% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,998 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.50% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 113.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,899, and the median income for a family is $34,302. Males have a median income of $26,496 versus $20,237 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,951. 20.00% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.30% are under the age of 18 and 22.80% are 65 or older.
