Loup City, Nebraska

Loup City is a city located in Sherman County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 996. It is the county seat of Sherman County6.

Geography Loup City is located at 41°16'38" North, 98°58'5" West (41.277332, -98.968063)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 996 people, 472 households, and 267 families residing in the city. The population density is 442.0/km² (1,139.9/mi²). There are 566 housing units at an average density of 251.2/km² (647.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.89% White, 0.00% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 472 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.4% are non-families. 41.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 26.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,829, and the median income for a family is $32,396. Males have a median income of $26,830 versus $17,083 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,325. 18.7% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.5% are under the age of 18 and 20.6% are 65 or older.
