Los Fresnos is a city located in Cameron County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,512.

Geography Los Fresnos is located at 26°4'24" North, 97°28'41" West (26.073216, -97.478164)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.97% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,512 people, 1,296 households, and 1,092 families residing in the city. The population density is 722.9/km² (1,868.9/mi²). There are 1,480 housing units at an average density of 237.1/km² (613.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.96% White, 0.42% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 14.38% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. 84.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,296 households out of which 53.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.7% are non-families. 14.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.48 and the average family size is 3.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 36.4% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,793, and the median income for a family is $27,670. Males have a median income of $20,459 versus $17,904 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,507. 34.2% of the population and 28.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.8% are under the age of 18 and 22.4% are 65 or older.
