London, Ohio

London is a city that was established in 1810 to serve as the seat of Madison County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,771 (7,807 in 1990). The zip code is 43140.

Geography London is located at 39°53'15" North, 83°26'42" West (39.887466, -83.445041)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²). 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,771 people, 3,590 households, and 2,301 families residing in the city. The population density is 397.9/km² (1,031.0/mi²). There are 3,848 housing units at an average density of 174.6/km² (452.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.96% White, 6.78% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 2.10% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,590 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,641, and the median income for a family is $42,400. Males have a median income of $33,092 versus $26,048 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,404. 11.7% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.3% are under the age of 18 and 11.7% are 65 or older.


London is also the name of a cross-road northeast of Shelby in Richland County. It is centered at 40°55'N 82°38'W.
