Logan County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 37,710. Its county seat is Logan6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,180 km² (456 mi²). 1,176 km² (454 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 37,710 people, 14,880 households, and 10,936 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (83/mi²). There are 16,807 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.33% White, 2.59% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,880 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,603, and the median income for a family is $29,072. Males have a median income of $31,515 versus $20,212 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,102. 24.10% of the population and 20.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.60% are under the age of 18 and 14.40% are 65 or older.
