Major archaeological discoveries tend to be those which appear, are referred to in the media and popular culture and then sink back into oblivion. For this reason we tend to associate the archeology of Egypt with the 1920s-the era of
Tutankahmen[?]. Most of those listed here had significance for the development of
archaeology as a discipline and added to human knowledge. However, it is not uncommon for such discoveries to be discredited at a later date (eg.
Piltdown Man) or for their meaning to be reassessed in the context of later discoveries.
Some archaeological discoveries may be associated with a particular site; others are equally relevant out of context.
