Lillington, North Carolina

Lillington is a town located in Harnett County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,915. It is the county seat of Harnett County6.

Geography Lillington is located at 35°23'55" North, 78°48'49" West (35.398586, -78.813497)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,915 people, 799 households, and 484 families residing in the town. The population density is 282.1/km² (730.5/mi²). There are 894 housing units at an average density of 86.5/km² (224.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 54.75% White, 40.55% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 2.16% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 4.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 799 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 18.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 15.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 40.4% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 141.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 154.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,670, and the median income for a family is $42,366. Males have a median income of $30,305 versus $23,214 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,664. 20.3% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.2% are under the age of 18 and 20.4% are 65 or older.
