# Lignite, North Dakota

Lignite is a city located in Burke County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 174.

Geography Lignite is located at 48°52'37" North, 102°33'45" West (48.876908, -102.562603)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²). 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 174 people, 85 households, and 57 families residing in the city. The population density is 479.9/km² (1,244.4/mi²). There are 111 housing units at an average density of 306.1/km² (793.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 85 households out of which 22.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.48.

In the city the population is spread out with 17.2% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 19.5% from 25 to 44, 37.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $20,833, and the median income for a family is$33,750. Males have a median income of $37,917 versus$11,607 for females. The per capita income for the city is \$15,346. 11.4% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.0% are under the age of 18 and 19.0% are 65 or older.
