Level 42

Level 42 were an English pop band of the 1980s who throughout that decade had a number of hits in the UK and around the world.

The band members were.

  • Mark King - Vocals/Bass.
  • Mike Lindup - Keyboards/Vocals.
  • Boon Gould - Guitars.
  • Phil Gould - Drums.

Level 42 were formed in 1980 in Manchester as a Jazz-Funk fusion band. Towards the end of the 1980s however the band had became a slick R&B based Synth pop act. Despite a number of hits, Level 42 were never a hugely high profile band.

Level 42 had their first hit in 1983 with the single "The Sun Goes Down (Living it Up)" which hit the British top ten.

In 1986 after several smaller hits, the band had a UK number one hit with the single "Lessons in Love" and another big hit with the single "Something About You" which reached number seven in the US charts. Over the following few years they had more hits with the singles "Running in the Family" "To Be With You Again" "Staring at the Sun" and "Heaven in My Hands" but these were only big hits in the UK, their 1987 album also called Running in the Family[?] was a best seller.

The Gould brothers left the band in 1988 in protest at the increasingly "pop" direction of the band's music. Level 42 still exist with a different line up but havn't had a hit for a number of years.
