Leflore County, Mississippi

Leflore County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 37,947. Its county seat is Greenwood6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,570 km² (606 mi²). 1,533 km² (592 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.38% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 37,947 people, 12,956 households, and 8,887 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (64/mi²). There are 14,097 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 30.00% White, 67.73% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,956 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.00% are married couples living together, 27.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.33.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.70% under the age of 18, 13.10% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 18.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,518, and the median income for a family is $26,059. Males have a median income of $25,959 versus $18,497 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,553. 34.80% of the population and 29.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 48.00% are under the age of 18 and 24.50% are 65 or older.
