Lee County, Arkansas

Lee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 12,580. The county seat is Marianna.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,604 km² (619 mi²). 1,558 km² (602 mi²) of it is land and 46 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.87% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,580 people, 4,182 households, and 2,960 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 4,768 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 41.41% White, 57.24% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.40% from two or more races. 2.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,182 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.20% are married couples living together, 23.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 111.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 118.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $20,510, and the median income for a family is $25,846. Males have a median income of $26,900 versus $19,505 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,983. 29.90% of the population and 24.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.80% are under the age of 18 and 27.60% are 65 or older.
