Le Flore County, Oklahoma

Le Flore County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 48,109. Its county seat is Poteau6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,165 km² (1,608 mi²). 4,107 km² (1,586 mi²) of it is land and 58 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.38% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 48,109 people, 17,861 households, and 13,199 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 20,142 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.35% White, 2.21% African American, 10.72% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 5.03% from two or more races. 3.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,861 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,278, and the median income for a family is $32,603. Males have a median income of $26,214 versus $19,792 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,737. 19.10% of the population and 15.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.10% are under the age of 18 and 16.50% are 65 or older.
