Lawrence County, Tennessee

Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 39,926. Its county seat is Lawrenceburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,600 km² (618 mi²). 1,598 km² (617 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,926 people, 15,480 households, and 11,362 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (65/mi²). There are 16,821 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.83% White, 1.47% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,480 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 23.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,498, and the median income for a family is $35,326. Males have a median income of $27,742 versus $20,928 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,848. 14.60% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.20% are under the age of 18 and 16.30% are 65 or older.
