Laurens County, South Carolina

Laurens County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 69,567. Its county seat is Laurens6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,875 km² (724 mi²). 1,852 km² (715 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 69,567 people, 26,290 households, and 18,876 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (97/mi²). There are 30,239 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.57% White, 26.23% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,290 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.10% are married couples living together, 15.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,933, and the median income for a family is $39,739. Males have a median income of $30,402 versus $21,684 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,761. 14.30% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.60% are under the age of 18 and 13.50% are 65 or older.
