Laurel County, Kentucky

Laurel County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 52,715. Its county seat is London6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,149 km² (444 mi²). 1,128 km² (436 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.82% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 52,715 people, 20,353 households, and 15,366 families residing in the county. The population density is 47/km² (121/mi²). There are 22,317 housing units at an average density of 20/km² (51/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.66% White, 0.63% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 20,353 households out of which 35.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.50% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,015, and the median income for a family is $31,318. Males have a median income of $27,965 versus $19,757 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,165. 21.30% of the population and 17.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.80% are under the age of 18 and 20.10% are 65 or older.
