Lauderdale County, Tennessee

Lauderdale County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 27,101. Its county seat is Ripley6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,313 km² (507 mi²). 1,218 km² (470 mi²) of it is land and 95 km² (37 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,101 people, 9,567 households, and 6,811 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 10,563 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.82% White, 34.08% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,567 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 17.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 108.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,751, and the median income for a family is $36,841. Males have a median income of $28,325 versus $21,238 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,682. 19.20% of the population and 16.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.70% are under the age of 18 and 26.50% are 65 or older.
