Lapwai, Idaho

Lapwai is a city located in Nez Perce County, Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,134.

Geography Lapwai is located at 46°24'16" North, 116°48'16" West (46.404388, -116.804376)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.28% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,134 people, 339 households, and 270 families residing in the city. The population density is 568.6/km² (1,466.9/mi²). There are 364 housing units at an average density of 182.5/km² (470.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 16.14% White, 0.53% African American, 81.39% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 4.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 339 households out of which 48.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% are married couples living together, 27.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 17.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.35 and the average family size is 3.68.

In the city the population is spread out with 39.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,800, and the median income for a family is $30,417. Males have a median income of $31,382 versus $22,109 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,159. 23.7% of the population and 20.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.2% are 65 or older.
