Lancaster, Wisconsin

Lancaster is a city located in Grant County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,070. It is the county seat of Grant County6.

Geography Lancaster is located at 42°50'55" North, 90°42'38" West (42.848505, -90.710430)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 4,070 people, 1,706 households, and 1,079 families residing in the city. The population density is 557.2/km² (1,441.1/mi²). There are 1,799 housing units at an average density of 246.3/km² (637.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.24% White, 0.07% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,706 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 31.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,723, and the median income for a family is $47,500. Males have a median income of $30,683 versus $22,331 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,797. 8.9% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.9% are under the age of 18 and 9.7% are 65 or older.
