Lake in the Hills is a village located in McHenry County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 23,152.

Geography Lake in the Hills is located at 42°11'12" North, 88°20'51" West (42.186729, -88.347429)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 25.0 km² (9.6 mi²). 24.3 km² (9.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.39% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,152 people, 7,652 households, and 6,297 families residing in the village. The population density is 951.0/km² (2,461.9/mi²). There are 7,866 housing units at an average density of 323.1/km² (836.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.59% White, 1.50% African American, 0.14% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 6.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,652 households out of which 51.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.4% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% are non-families. 13.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.35.

In the village the population is spread out with 33.4% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 44.5% from 25 to 44, 13.4% from 45 to 64, and 3.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $73,313, and the median income for a family is $76,921. Males have a median income of $51,598 versus $34,449 for females. The per capita income for the village is $26,239. 2.1% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.3% are under the age of 18 and 0.9% are 65 or older.
