Lake Station is a city located in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,948.

Geography Lake Station is located at 41°34'11" North, 87°15'35" West (41.569836, -87.259785)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.9 km² (8.5 mi²). 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.01% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,948 people, 5,041 households, and 3,528 families residing in the city. The population density is 648.8/km² (1,681.0/mi²). There are 5,328 housing units at an average density of 247.8/km² (642.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.23% White, 0.77% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 9.31% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. 20.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,041 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $36,984, and the median income for a family is $41,454. Males have a median income of $35,761 versus $22,659 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,319. 14.6% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.3% are under the age of 18 and 10.0% are 65 or older.
