Lake Andes, South Dakota

Lake Andes is a city located in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 819. It is the county seat of Charles Mix County6.

Geography Lake Andes is located at 43°9'25" North, 98°32'17" West (43.156825, -98.538053)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 819 people, 320 households, and 181 families residing in the city. The population density is 395.3/km² (1,019.7/mi²). There are 369 housing units at an average density of 178.1/km² (459.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 54.82% White, 0.37% African American, 42.61% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 2.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 320 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.9% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.4% are non-families. 40.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.33.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,000, and the median income for a family is $28,833. Males have a median income of $21,333 versus $19,097 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,022. 33.2% of the population and 26.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.7% are under the age of 18 and 28.3% are 65 or older.
