Lafayette County, Florida

Lafayette County is a county located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 7,022. Its county seat is Mayo, Florida6.

History Lafayette County was created in 1856. It was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, French officer who served with George Washington in the American Revolutionary War.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,419 km² (548 mi²). 1,406 km² (543 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,022 people, 2,142 households, and 1,591 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (13/mi²). There are 2,660 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.27% White, 14.37% African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 4.30% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 9.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,142 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.70% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 34.00% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 148.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 157.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,651, and the median income for a family is $35,020. Males have a median income of $25,030 versus $22,007 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,087. 17.50% of the population and 12.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.70% are under the age of 18 and 17.30% are 65 or older.
