Lafayette County, Arkansas

Lafayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 8,559. The county seat is Lewisville.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,412 km² (545 mi²). 1,364 km² (526 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,559 people, 3,434 households, and 2,376 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 4,560 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.08% White, 36.49% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,434 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.60% are married couples living together, 14.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 28.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,831, and the median income for a family is $30,720. Males have a median income of $26,492 versus $17,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,128. 23.20% of the population and 18.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.50% are under the age of 18 and 19.30% are 65 or older.
