According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.0 km² (6.2 mi²). 14.5 km² (5.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.39% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,721 people, 10,008 households, and 7,986 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,256.0/km² (5,843.6/mi²). There are 10,236 housing units at an average density of 705.7/km² (1,828.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 50.21% White, 14.48% African American, 0.88% Native American, 9.83% Asian, 1.13% Pacific Islander, 16.35% from other races, and 7.13% from two or more races. 33.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
